Filmmaker Charlotte Verminck (26), from Knokke-Heist, has won the award for Best Sound with her short film Mind of Thoughts at the Festival of Cinema in New York. The festival is dedicated to promoting independent films - those not produced by major studios. It’s not the first time her short film has been recognized; earlier this year, Verminck won the Best International Film award in Los Angeles.

The short film Mind of Thoughts explores the power of our thoughts and their influence on daily life. “We often think we’re not good enough, or that we should be doing better,” says filmmaker Charlotte Verminck. “I hope people feel less alone and more understood when they watch the film.”
The jury at Festival of Cinema NYC was certainly convinced. “We received the Best Sound Award. As a director and writer, this is a very important prize for me. Sound is often undervalued, while it plays such a crucial role in shaping the strength of a film. I’m grateful that the people responsible for this aspect are being put in the spotlight.” The sound design of the short film was created by Eneas Mentzel.
Filming at a prestigious Bruges hotel
A fun detail: part of the film was shot at the prestigious Grand Hotel Casselbergh in Bruges. “I used to go there for coffee with my grandmother,” Verminck recalls. “I always thought it was such a beautiful location.”
“It was the first time filming ever took place at the hotel. At first, they said no to my request, but in the end they agreed, because they truly believed in the film.”
